Periodontal Treatment

Target gum disease early with advanced periodontal treatment.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It typically starts with the buildup of plaque – a sticky film of bacteria – along the gumline. Without proper oral hygiene, plaque can harden into tartar, leading to inflammation of the gums (gingivitis). If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, causing irreversible damage to the gums and bone that support the teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gum disease questions answered for patients in New Haven, CT.

What are the early signs of gum disease?

Bleeding when you brush or floss is the one most people notice first. Others include gums that look puffy or red, persistent bad breath, tenderness when chewing, and teeth that suddenly look longer as the gumline pulls back. None of these are normal, and all of them are worth checking.

What causes gum disease?

Bacteria in plaque that sits along and under the gumline drive the process. Smoking makes it worse and slows healing, and genetics, diabetes, and certain medications all raise your risk. Inconsistent brushing and flossing let the plaque harden into tartar, which cannot be removed with a toothbrush.

What is scaling and root planing?

It is the standard non surgical treatment for gum disease. The hygienist removes plaque and hardened tartar from the tooth roots below the gumline and smooths those root surfaces so the gum tissue can reattach. The area is numbed, and it is usually split across two visits by half of the mouth.

Can gum disease be reversed?

Gingivitis, the early stage, generally clears up with professional treatment and better home care. Once it advances to periodontitis and bone has been lost, that bone does not grow back on its own, but the disease can be stopped and kept stable with therapy and regular maintenance visits.

How often will I need periodontal maintenance?

Once the disease is under control, most patients at our New Haven office move to a maintenance interval of three to four months rather than the usual six. The shorter gap keeps bacteria from rebuilding in the deeper pockets. Your dentist sets the interval from your pocket readings, not from a fixed rule.

Does insurance cover periodontal treatment?

Gum therapy is usually classed as a basic or major service rather than cosmetic, so most plans contribute once the diagnosis and pocket depths are documented. Divine Smiles works with HUSKY Health, Medicaid, and most major PPO plans, and CareCredit is there if you need to spread the balance. Call (203) 865-1480 to get scheduled.
